I learned a few things about reading.
It's all a personal opinion no one is right or wrong here.
For me, reading is important, not what I read
While I am reading I don't go into how much this will help me in real life but rather I focus on am I enjoying the read?
For example, I read a book called the Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari and it's all about history. Now, if I open the doors of "it helping me in real life" I will probably read another book. But I still choose to read it because history fascinates me and I enjoyed reading the book. The same thing applies to reading novels. The thing I keep in mind is am I enjoying the read? even it is a bestseller novel but I don't enjoy it I choose not to read it.
Reading can't be habited
While I read I have noticed that my reading pattern can't be habited. I have heard many people say that they are habitual to reading, but it never happened to me.
If I have been reading daily for two hours for a week and I think that "this routine will go on and I don't have to put any effort into reading"
But in fact, I end up watching a series or wasting time on my phone. the habit doesnt go on because I still have to put effort, everyday.
So reading to me is like a new start every day. I have to choose reading, again and again, every day, there isn't any default for me.
Sure, if I have been reading for a long time, it will be easy for me to sit for a longer time, and I might be fast in reading.
However, opening the book is every day walking in the arena for me.
Read, write, repeat
I read something then I write it down. whatever I got. I try to write it down.
It's the simplest way I know to learn what I read. When I write, I get clarity of thoughts, okay this is what I have learned. Oh! this I don't know, okay! with this, my values don't align.
This step I don't always follow, but whenever I follow this, I open new gates for me to learn.
Falling in love is important
When I read enough, I will fall in love. Is there a magic number that I have to read before I fall in love? Unfortunately no!.
The only way I know is by reading what I enjoy. and I think everyone has their choice of interest and there are always books about what your interests are.
There is no shame in what you enjoy.
If I talk about my interests, I love reading Gujarati novels which are not aligning with today's culture because the great ones are old, which doesn't teach me much, but I still choose to read them because I enjoy them. I even read history books and even ancient stories like Ramayan and Mahabharata, and I love reading books that are written for kids like I read Velveteen rabbit and Winnie the pooh a few months back!
Just fall in love with reading itself, it's not that hard. I try different books, I leave'em in the middle till I find what you enjoy.
And I have used the word "fall". Falling is easy when you let go. be in the free fall.
Every day I lean back in my chair and let the words do their magic.
